Surya Stree: A Battery Free Solar Iron Press

Iron press (sometimes called iron box) is a small appliance used in daily life for ironing clothes. there are different categories of the iron press such as electric iron press, coal-fired iron press, and gas-fired iron press. all these iron presses are dependent on non-renewable sources of energy. coal-fired and gas-fired iron presses create pollution in the environment, as well as health hazards to the operators, are also associated with them. still in india, there are many places where these consumable sources are not available or people of these areas cannot afford them. in india, many people earn their livelihood by running the ironing shops or laundry where they provide the service related to ironing the clothes. so our innovation is based on providing a solution where the ironing would be dependent on renewable source of energy only with the minimum initial one-time cost of setup. one type of iron press is the solar iron press which utilizes solar energy for the heating purpose but ultimately that is a dc iron press which is operated by a battery. battery is charged by the solar panels. the efficiency of such solar iron press becomes very low due to energy losses at different conversion stages. first, the solar radiation is converted into electricity using the solar panel, then this solar-generated electricity is stored in the form of chemical energy in the battery, then this stored energy is again converted to electricity in the discharging cycle of the battery, this electricity is further converted into heat for the heating purpose. so, there is a good amount of energy that is lost in energy conversion from one form to another. in our innovation a battery-free solar iron press has been proposed which is based on the concept of direct thermal heating without a need to store the energy in the battery. in this innovation solar radiating is concentrated using a high power lens. in the present innovation, the fresnel lens is used for concentrating the solar radiation. heat concentrated using fresnel lens is utilized to heat the oil container from which the heated oil is circulated through a hollow metallic pocket placed in the iron press. the heated oil heats the base plate of the iron press through a hollow metallic pocket sufficiently for the ironing purpose. the heated oil is circulated intermittently using a hand-operated pump as and when required. to control the temperature of the iron press, screw and nut based mechanical arrangement has been incorporated in the iron press. when the knob attached with the screw is rotated manually the screw moves linearly upward in the associated nut which is fixed in the body of the iron press. the screw’s one end is attached to the knob and the other end is connected to the hollow metal pocket. the hollow metal pocket moves up and down along the screw. so, when it needed to control the temperature, the same can be controlled by lifting or lowering the metal pocket. when the metal pocket is fully detached from the base plate of the solar iron press, there will be no contact between metal pocket and the base plate which will result in lowering the temperature of the base plate. the fresnel lens can be moved manually as per the direction of solar radiation at different times of the day.
