This project titled nfc based airport baggage system uses near field communication (nfc) is a short-range hf high frequency (13.56 hz) wireless communication technology that enables the exchange of data between devices over about a 10-15 cm distance. nfc is an upgrade of rfid that combines the interface of a smartcard and a reader into a single device. currently bar code systems are used at airports which make baggage tracking difficult and lead to mishandling of baggage. so we are proposing a solution to this problem by using the low cost nfc tags for the tracking of passenger baggage. this project would involve delivering an implementation using raspberry pi model b and pn522 rfid/nfc shield for reading the mifare luggage tag and use of silicon nfc bracelet tags containing passenger luggage and boarding details. this would also include delivering of a display interface using a 7 inch lcd display for viewing the passenger information and luggage status. the solution being proposed by this project using the nfc technology will be streamlined on the following process: 1. when passenger arrives at check – in counter, nfc tags will be attached to each baggage and a nfc wrist band will be given to the passenger. this band will act as boarding pass and will contain the details of baggage tags. 2. the baggage tags will be read at various junction points of the conveyor belts by the nfc reader during the baggage movement to and from the airline. this would update the status of the baggage each time the bag tag is read. so probability of misplacing is highly reduced. 3. at the boarding gate user will touch the wrist band on the lcd interface where details of boarding can be seen. this would imply that the passenger has boarded the flight. the luggage status will also be displayed. 4. after de-boarding from flight the wrist band will again have to be touched with the lcd interface to see the status of the luggage. the lcd will display the details of the conveyor belt number from where the luggage is to be collected. 5. after the collection of luggage, there will be a security gate at the exit point where the user has to submit the luggage tags and wrist band. if the user is carrying a wrong tag/ incorrect no. of tags, the exit gate would not allow the user to exit from the airport.
