In-house Development Of Miniature Universal Testing Machine
Project Description :

Conventional universal testing machine (utm) consists of hydraulic power pack which drives the moving jaw and exerts required force on the specimen, held in between the moving and the stationary jaws. the pressure developed in the hydraulic system is measured and the equivalent force exerted is shown by a calibrated dial. for measurement of the deflection, a separate measuring instrument is to be mounted on the specimen. this procedure demands patience and experience along with expertise. the conventional utm available in the market are very expensive with cost more than rs. 80 lakhs. this available universal testing machines, though of higher capacity do not have the required accuracy and do not have any inbuilt facility for measuring the deflection very effectively. owing to these shortcomings, it isn’t very friendly for educational purpose. to overcome this, we have designed and fabricated a very light weight, mobile set up which precisely measures the force applied on the specimen, its deflection and also displays the results on digital screens. the developed set-up can be used in educational instituebesides, the machine is also designed to be very cost effective. the machine developed can be used for carrying out various tests like shear tests, compression and tensile tests, bending tests for simply supported, fixed and cantilever beams and hardness tests. the structure is designed to sustain a maximum force of 2500n with negligible self-bending. few salient features of the developed utm are as listed below: • easier to maintain. • it is very economical as compared to the available machines used for the same purpose. • it is a mobile setup with manageable weight. • model will be small and compact, which can be carried to regular classes for demonstration. • no need of extra accessories. • no electric supply needed as it solely works on air pressure. • material consumption is less compared to existing machine at lab and hence economical. • easier and safer to perform experiments with the help of it. students will be able to perform the experiments by themselves and no dedicated lab assistant is required.
