Hear Me Out - Voice Controlled Wheelchair With Obstacle Detection.
Project Description :

A wheelchair is a chair with wheels used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, old age related problems, or disability.they may include specialized seating adaptations, individualized controls and may be specific to particular activities, as seen with sports wheelchairs and beach wheelchairs. the types of wheelchairs available in the market today are: manual self-propelled wheelchairs ( foldable and rigid types), manual attendant-propelled wheelchairs with smaller diameter wheels, electric powered wheelchairs controlled using a joystick, mobility scooters, single-arm drive wheelchairs, reclining and tilting wheelchairs, standing wheelchairs, sports wheelchairs, wheelchair stretchers,all-terrain wheelchairs, smart wheelchairs that uses a control system to control its motion.the control system could be a joystick or a touch sensitive display, beach and snow wheelchairs. a majority of population using regular wheelchairs often suffer tips and falls due to collisions with obstacles leading to accidents. thus the feature of obstacle detection on a wheelchair was developed. the idea behind the "hear me out - voice controlled wheelchair with obstacle detection" is to provide a safer rehabilitation device to the users. the product users that are predominantly focused are quadriplegic patients and geriatric patients. the wheelchair is designed to be used mainly in indoors like at home and hospitals and by the population who suffer severe motor disabilities. here, wheelchair is controlled by using simple commands by the user . the controlling system of this product uses arduino uno r3, a microcontroller board based on atmega328p microcontroller and developed by arduino.cc. the input command from the user is recognized by voice recognition module v3 by elechouse which outputs the audio signal through its serial port pins. this signal is decoded by the arduino board which controls two dc motors through l298n motor driver module according to the command. an ultrasonic sensor is provided in front of the wheelchair to detect any obstacles within the range of 30-50cm. when it detects any, the wheelchair stops and looks for any obstruction on both sides using two other sensors fitted to both sides. it turns to either side accordingly and when the main obstacle in the front is avoided, it deviates back to the original direction it was meant to go, thus avoiding the obstacle. in this era of covid-19, sanitation is important. thus, a provision for sanitization can be incorporated into this design. the product can be foldable to occupy less space for storage. a 'stop' command locks the wheels and it can prevent accidents. the aim is to build to a regular size wheelchair that shows the obstacle avoiding feature and thus provide a smooth navigation.
