Economical Paper-strip For Early Stage Mastitis Disease Detection In Cow
Project Description :

Cost as low as rs 1/- , portable, ecological compatible and self-diagnostic, reagent incorporated paper based microfluidic device that we have designed will help farmers to screen and monitor milk yield and quality reducing mastitis disease in cows at early stage. the turn around time for detection of disease using our method is 15 minutes approximately with high accuracy and efficiency irrespective of any interference substances unlike other methods which require days. mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland in animal’s udder and is one of the most economically devastating diseases in dairy cattle and adversely affects the animal health.currently, the disease is detected in clinical settings by expensive techniques and also in places, which are miles away from remote villages. known at early-stage, disease can be cured.70% decrease in milk yield due to mastitis leads to huge financial losses and annual economic loss due to mastitis worldwide is $35 billion and 7615.15 crores rupees in india. sub-clinical mastitis is responsible for inr 4151.16 crores loss.it has a serious zoonotic potential associated with shedding of bacteria and their toxins in the milk. our invention includes paper-strip based on the qualitative and quantitative detection of somatic cells, which are the major indicators of mastitis disease.the unique combination of the reagent and dye for the detection is developed by a research for the first time ,and to achieve a cost effective solution ,designed paper strip having desirable pore size with hydrophobic nature of inexpensive filter paper.a drop of milk is to be added to the reagent incorporated paper strip which is a chemical printed on a filter paper by normal inkjet printer, and incubated for about 10 minutes. through the natural capillary action the milk reacts with reagent and provided dye is to be added.it will show a instant change in colour. colour intensity is the measure of the prevalence of mastitis disease. the colour change is detected by mobile camera and quantified by a software or is self-descriptive through naked eye. this paper-strip can be used by farmers, dairy industry, veterinarian, house holds and regulatory agencies as an indicator of the safety and suitability of raw milk for consumption by humans. farmers can negotiate a good price with diary industry based on milk quality information from paper-strip and our invention has potential to enhance quality of life for dairy producers and their cows. accurate and early stage mastitis detection with our affordable paper strip prevent spreading milk borne diseases.this will increase the dairy industry contribution to indian gdp. paper-strip can be utilised by relatively untrained people, uses laymen terms to deliver the best information and is complete with easy-to-understand information.
