Eco-phyto-pack: packaging the future eco-biodegradable phyto-plant source pack- packaging materials "daily, around 15,000 tons of plastic garbage is produced in the country out of which 9,000 tons is collected and 6,000 tons is left (cpcb-2013). the increased use of plastic has posed a serious concern about environment pollution due to the related disposal problems of non-degraded polymers. this problem can be addressed effectively with the development of biodegradable packaging materials. in addition, the utilization of waste from the plant and animal industry is immensely important for environment sustainability. the developed biodegradable films has the ability to serve many functions, viz. carrier of antimicrobials, antioxidants, or other nutraceuticals, without significantly compromising the desirable properties like water vapour, gas and flavour barrier and mechanical properties. further, these are edible, biodegradable and renewable and add nutritive value to the products. in the present project, an edible starch based film was developed with the incorporation of phyto-ingredients from sea buckthorn seed extracts, which has known antioxidants and antimicrobial potential and may prolong the shelf life of perishable food products such as meat and meat products. this innovation may bring the revolution in the future packaging industry.
