Eco Friendly Bamboo Sawdust Composite Material For Product Design

In northeast region of india, bamboo is integral part of society as this material is available in abundance. here it is also called as a green gold. being integral part of society bamboo has its own firm place in the life and livelihood in interior reach of this terrain. a decade ago bamboo was adopted as a primary raw material for producing industrial products such as bamboo flooring, bamboo sticks, bamboo blinds etc. thanks to the government for its support because of which we could see such units/industries in this region. the process of making these products is industrial where it requires a set of machines for splitting, drilling, chipping and cutting of bamboo. in this manufacturing process bamboo has to go through all these operation which results in production of secondary raw material i.e. strips, sticks etc. side effect of this process is that it generates huge amount of sawdust. the amount of saw dust is 60% than the amount of raw material produced. this sawdust is considered as a waste and used as a fuel to burn in ovens. project is an attempt to use and convert this process generated sawdust into daily use objects and products. another important aspect is to involve handicraft in this process which will create completely different range of products with new aesthetics and new values. bamboo sawdust is the mixture of fine grains with fibers and it is associated with properties like low cost, light weight and high tensile strength. after mixing with proper binding material, this sawdust forms dough which after drying becomes solid mass. after series of experiments with various binder materials and compositions of them with sawdust we observed that it could be used to form various products. this process is then used to design variety of products like small stools, idols etc. this ecofriendly material will convert process generated sawdust into large number of products like speaker cabinets, decorative items, idols, furniture etc.
