India is the largest producer of drumsticks (in marathi- shevga) in the world. unfortunately, there is no dedicated drumstick harvesting tool available in the market. farmers use self-made tools which are not efficient enough to pluck only matured drumsticks out of the whole bunch. sometimes, the entire branch of drumsticks breaks down along with immature pods and flowers causing considerable loss. generally an acre size of farm contain 65 trees approximately and to harvest all the pods, it takes around 3 to 4 hours. the traditional harvesting tools made up of bamboo are heavy (3 kgs to 5 kgs). the farmer has to carry such a heavy tool for 3 to 4 hours. it causes extreme muscle pain in the shoulders, back and fore-hand. the traditional tool, also called as “aakada” in local marathi is inefficient to pluck only mature pods. aiming to specific pod is difficult. sometimes pod slips out of the hook which makes farmer to try 2 to 3 times to pluck a single pod. it makes the harvesting activity time-consuming. with traditional tool, plucked pods fall directly on the ground from a height of 5 to 18 feet. if there is grass or any other vegetable on the ground, then the pods gets camouflaged in the grass which makes farmer to search it. this makes it time consuming activity. if, there is no grass on the ground, the drumstick pods get minute skin damage due to falling on hard ground, which gives darker shade at those areas and eventually farmer gets less price in the market. also, after plucking every 5 to 10 pods, farmer has to put the tool down, walk towards the pods, bend down, collect them, come back to the aakada, and lift it for next harvesting. which is time consuming & tiring activity. many times, in the absence of the farmer, other people use the same tool to harvest pods and take it away with them, causing considerable amount of loss. also there were some other problems related such as affordability, physical affliction, etc. with this project, i tried to solve all these problems in drumstick harvesting activity. output of the project: the output of the project was an affordable, efficient and light weight drumstick harvesting tool. its pipe was made up of aluminum telescopic pipe, which made it light weight (1 kgs approximately) which reduces the muscle strain. also, its telescopic mechanism made it easy to reduce its length and easy to put inside storeroom, and also it could be carried to home. also, the upper hook at the top was replaced by a ‘cylindrical cutter pipe’ (material- pvc pipe / stainless steel) having slits on its periphery. working principle of the ‘cylindrical cutting pipe’: the point at which the pod is attached to the stem is very week. if slight pressure is given at this point, it breaks easily without damaging the pod. this cylindrical cutter made the aiming to the mature pod very easy and it did not allow the pod to slip out of it. the tool has a long cylindrical flexible bag (material - polyester) attached to the cylindrical cutter pipe which runs from the top to the bottom of the pipe. once, any pod is plucked, it travels from this bag and gets collected at the bottom of the bag near farmer. smooth polyester material helps to carry plucked pods from top to bottom without getting entangled with the cloth. so, the farmer can pluck 15 to 20 pods continuously which get collected in the bag. it saves drumstick pods from getting damage.
