Compact Design Of Planar Stepped Micro Combustor For Portable Thermoelectric Power Generation
Project Description :

A new concept of portable thermoelectric power generator with high power density (0.14mw/mm3) and conversion efficiency (4.66 %) is developed. the proposed power generation system consists of two thermoelectric modules mounted on a dual micro combustor with liquefied petroleum gas as fuel. experimental studies on flame stability and thermal characteristics of a dual three step micro combustor are investigated. two micro combustors are fabricated inside a rectangular metal medium made up of aluminium is used as a heating source. dual micro combustion provides better stability and thermal characteristics over the single combustor due to the distributed heat and enhanced heat recirculation. a maximum conversion efficiency of 4.66% is obtained at a fuel input of 97w. the upper flame stability limits were enhanced significantly with porous media and maximum conversion efficiencies of 4.32 %, 4.66 %, and 4.19 % are achieved respectively for f = 1, 0.9 and 0.8 respectively at a mixture velocity of 10 m/s. a power density of 0.14 mw/mm3 is achieved in the proposed system, which is ~ 50% higher than the existing similar stand-alone power generation systems reported. a compact design of the prototype system with high conversion efficiency shows the possibility of its application for various systems requiring portable power for remote, stand-alone, military and aerospace applications.
