Synopsis: we believe that every person has the potential to change the world. unfortunately, handicapped people are often limited by the accessibility they get in transport to explore the outside world. this is mainly due to the need of a caregiver to accompany the person most of the time. traditional wheelchairs often cause accidents due to avoidable collisions and improper navigation. this, in turn, causes injuries to the person on the seat and thus limits his/her accessibility to outside world. project abhiyaan (noun: an adventure exploration or exciting experience) aims at developing an autonomous transportation system for such handicapped people. the wheelchair we developed has the system for autonomous navigation built in such that the user never has to worry about how to control the wheelchair. just enter the destination point and the chair will magically take him/her to that point. moreover, by using autonomous navigation, this wheelchair will be less prone to accidents caused by human faults. the designed vehicle is capable of avoiding static and dynamic obstacles, potholes etc., on the path. we use lidar, a color camera and an imu to detect and plan the navigation. by exploiting the current advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the algorithms we developed for obstacle detection and path planning are capable of safeguarding user from most of the dangers in the environment. optionally, the wheelchair can have a gps device and an internet connection which will help the loved ones of the person on the seat to monitor him remotely and also help in sending any notification in case of emergency. the same technology can also be used in hospitals/healthcare centers for trollies helping in moving patients from one department to another without the help of additional staff.
