Indian railways is owned and operated by the government of india through the ministry of railways. it is the fourth largest railway network in the world. as of today, the maximum number of accidents are caused due to the derailment of trains. the larger the rail network, more is the probability of accidents due to derailments. hence, in an attempt to save human lives and railways infrastructure, the objective of this research wotk is to develop a cheap sound intensity based framework which can help indian railways to track the location of faulty tracks during train running operations itself for maintenance purposes. the arduino microcontroller plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the device wherein a sound module is used to monitor the frequency of sound being recorded during train running conditions being in defined range or not; gps module for faulty track location and gsm module for transmitting the location and sound intensity details to the main server. the basic logic while implementing this device is that during normal train running conditions, a particular frequency of sound is produced which keeps on varying in a range with varying train speeds. however, in case of any abnormal sound frequency, the system will generate alert and will be validated in case same alert is produced with other trains as well. it is expected that the proposed system will help indian railways in reducing the accidents and save human lives along with redefined effective track maintenance schedules.
