A Multipurpose Low Cost Biological Air Purifier
Project Description :

Air pollution is the biggest culprit around the world and a profound threat that affects many aspects of human health and wellbeing. this work deals with the development of simple, cost-effective, renewable and eco-friendly biological air purifier (biosmotrap) to circumvent the problem of air pollution caused due to motor vehicles and industrial emissions. it reduces the levels of organic as well as inorganic pollutants from the air. in the proposed invention, a prototype was designed with a compact carriage assembly containing the replaceable adsorbent packed in biodegradable pouches or wrappers. the microbial biomass and/or natural biomaterials were employed in the form of solid porous material as an adsorbent. the onetime cost of carriage assembly is incurred with each biological air purifier. also with the use of recyclable adsorbent material the cost per air purifier is lowered by making it affordable to everyone. this study highlights the transformation of lab prototype design into its mass production and the use of biological air purifier on the roadside and /or footpath in pune district. this enables the installation of air purifier on petrol &/or diesel cars, trucks/tempos, autorickshaw exhaust. the results of this proposed work revealed that during the 160 km of vehicle run by installing the biosmotrap at the mouth of exhaust, the levels of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide were decreased by 80%, 51% and 33% respectively compared to the readings taken without biosmotrap. but sulphur dioxide levels were zero ppm at all the times. after the 160 km run of vehicle, biosmotrap was removed and readings taken were closer to the initial readings without biosmotrap. we believe the air purifier would significantly help alleviate the problems of poor air quality and help keep our environment safe so we can breathe deeper. the objectives of the proposed invention are as follows: objectives: 1. to manufacture the developed prototype (biosmotraps) at large scale and check its efficacy for reduction of air pollution caused due to motor vehicles. 2. to install these biosmotraps on the roadside and/or footpath in pune district and monitor improvement in outdoor air quality. 3. to install biosmotraps in one target industry where workers may be exposed to indoor pollutants and monitor improvement in indoor air quality.
