Spectral Eye
Project Description :

Every year, countless people die due to water poisoning. in a country like india, where people still do not have potable water, the onset of industrial explosion has worsened the problem. the chemical industries often contaminate the surrounding water bodies and these hazardous metals more than often find their way into the water bodies through which derive our drinking water. thus in the recent years, there have been incident of, presence of, dangerously high levels of heavy metals like arsenic, mercury, cadmium etc. the water we get at homes, through wells, hand pumps or any other source may appear clean, but might not turn out to be potable and analysis often required huge and expensive spectrometers, making water testing an expensive affair. our aim was to come up with a low cost and portable device that can be used to monitor/check the quality of water. spectral eye is a low cost and portable spectrometer, designed to detect and measure the amounts of various impurities in water. it can be used to detect any impurity which leaves a spectrometric signature. this device can be easily coupled with a cellphone. thus every person has the ability to analyse samples. the resulting spectrograms of the samples can be stored in an online database. with time, the size of the online database will increase and the detection/recognition of impurities will become increasingly accurate. the final objective is to empower every person with a cell phone to analyze his drinking water for presence of impurities.
