Wide variety of movement disorders appear in indian populations, ranging from accidental cases to genetic disorders. such physical impairments are salient features of disorders like various ataxias, dysplasias, various age associated neurological disorders etc. these disorders pose challenges and due to therapeutic limitations, especially in terms of treatments, are not cureable. the individuals suffering from such disorders, especially those where lower limbs are mainly affected, irrespective of the cause, are dependent on others for handeling their wheelchairs for mobility as well as to attend to their daily chores. we have noticed and discussed in details such issues with the affected individuals during our field visits and medical camps. many a patients suffering from such disorders that result in impairment of the lower limbs, do not find most of the wheelchairs available in market comfortable to be sit in for longer periods. wheelchairs with additional comfort features make such equipment very expensive and beyond the reach of common man. this project focuses on ergonomically designed manually powered multifunctional wheelchair. the motive behind designing 24x7 wheelchair is to make the patient independent and at the same time making a whole day experience relatively comfortable by including features like sitting, arm adjustment, stretcher with saline stand, commode with proper flushing facilities, seat width adjustments, ratchet system for mobility, accessories for eating and drinking purposes and detachable wash basin for basic cleaning. along features have been incorporated to facilitate basic physiotherapeutic exercises to help them strengthen their muscles. in addition to basic ergonomic design, that will make use of the wheelchair comfortable simultaneously we have incorporated various features that will reduce dependency of the individual on others and facilitate the user to be self sufficient to attend to his daily routines. the salient features added are: can be transformed to bed/stretcher commode and water tank as attachment washbasin as attachment ratchet and braking mechanism for easy wheel driving seat width adjustment as per need seat arms adjustable as a table removable armrest for easy shift from chair to bed spring installed footrests for exercise and physiotherapy of legs.
